Ancient Olympia

In the western Peloponnese region lies the most celebrated sanctuary of ancient Greece, across the lush green valley where the rivers of Alpheios and Kladeos meet, the site of ancient Olympia. During classical times, Olympia was the sacred city where the Olympic Games took place—the greatest athletic and cultural event of the ancient world. Dedicated to Zeus, the father of the gods, the site sprawls across the southwest foot of Kronios Hill, and is surrounded by a landscape of pristine nature.

Today, the archaeological site of Olympia is one of the most famous in Greece, receiving thousands of visitors every year from all around the world. Stroll around the sacred grove of Zeus known as Altis, which is the enclosure and the core of the site, to admire the temples of god Zeus and of his consort, goddess Hera, the principal altars, the small treasuries, and the administration buildings of the Olympic Games.
